15To Machir I assigned Gilead.
16And to the Reubenites and the Gadites I assigned the part from Gilead down to the wadi Arnon, the middle of the wadi being the boundary, and up to the wadi Jabbok, the boundary of the Ammonites.
THE MIDST OF THE BROOK AND THE TERRITORY, i.e., all the brook and in addition, land on its opposite bank. The words therefore are as much as to say, עד "unto” the Brook of Arnon, ועד "and” that which is mentioned as being "unto” (i.e. the Brook itself) is included (by the words תוך הנחל), and even more than this (namely, the גבול, land on the other side of the brook).
17fContinuing vv. 8–10; cf. 4.47–49. [We also seized] the Arabah, from the foot of the slopes of Pisgah on the east, to the edge of the Jordan, and from Chinnereth down to the sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea.
FROM CHINNERETH — This is on the western side of Jordan. The inheritance of the children of Gad was in the east side of the Jordan, and there fell as their lot the width of the Jordan, adjoining their territory, and in addition, land on its opposite bank up to Chinnereth. This is the meaning of what is said here, "And the Jordan and the territory thereof”, i.e. the Jordan and some land on its opposite bank.
18At that time I charged you, gyou Addressing the leaders of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh; cf. Num. 32. saying, “The ETERNAL your God has given you this country to possess. You must go as shock-troops, warriors all, at the head of your fellow Israelites.
AND I COMMANDED YOU — He now addresses himself to the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad.
[YE SHALL PASS OVER EQUIPPED] BEFORE YOUR BRETHREN — they used to go in front of the other Israelites into battle because they were mighty men, and the enemy fell before them, as it is said of Gad, (Deuteronomy 33:20) "He tears the arm together with the crown” (cf. Rashi on Numbers 32:17).
19Only your wives, children, and livestock—I know that you have much livestock—shall be left in the towns I have assigned to you,
20until GOD has granted your kindred a haven such as you have, and they too have taken possession of the land that the ETERNAL your God is assigning them, beyond the Jordan. Then you may return each to the homestead that I have assigned to him.”
21I also charged Joshua at that time, saying, “You have seen with your own eyes all that the ETERNAL your God has done to these two kings; so shall GOD do to all the kingdoms into which you shall cross over.
כ״בלֹ֖א תִּֽירָא֑וּם כִּ֚י יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם ה֖וּא הַנִּלְחָ֥ם לָכֶֽם׃ {ס}
22Do not fear them, for it is the ETERNAL your God who will battle for you.”
