ו׳יכולים לקרות ב' אחים זה אחר זה והבן אחר האב ואין מניחין אלא בשביל עין הרע. ואפי' אם א' הוא השביעי וא' הוא המפטיר לא יקראו השני בשמו משום עין הרע [מהרי"ל]:
6Two siblings may be called up [for aliyot], one after the other, and [so too] a child after a parent. But we do not allow it because of the "evil eye"). And even if one was [called up for] the seventh [aliyah] and one was [called up for] maftir [the concluding reader], the second one should not be called up with [that person's] name because of the "evil eye". ז׳העולה למגדל עולה בפתח שהיא לו בדרך קצרה ממקומו וירד מהמגדל בדרך אחר שהיא לו בדרך ארוכה עד מקומו ואם ב' הדרכים שוים עולה בפתח שהיא לו בדרך ימין וירד בפתח שכנגדו [ולא ירד עד שעלה כבר הראוי לקרות אחריו] (מרדכי הגדול]:
7The one who ascends to the raised platform [i.e. the bimah] should go up from the opening that is the shortest way from one's place [i.e. the place where one is praying] and descend from the platform on a different path which is the longest path back to one's place. And if two paths are equal [in distance from his place], one ascends by the opening that is on the right-hand path and descends by the opening on the opposite side. ח׳כל תיבה שהיא קרי וכתיב הלכה למשה מסיני שתהא נכתבת כמו שהיא בתורה ונקרית בענין אחר ומעשה בא' שקרא כמו שהיא כתובה בפני גדולי הדור הרבנים ה"ר יצחק אבוהב וה"ר אברהם ואלנסי שמואל ואלנסי בנו ז"ל והתרו בו שיקרא כפי המסורה ולא רצה ונדוהו והורידוהו מהתיבה:
8And word which is read [one way] and written [another way], it is a "Halakha l'Moshe Mi-Sinai" ["A law transmitted to Moses on Sinai"] that is should be written like it is in the Torah, but read in a different manner [i.e. read differently than it is written]. It happened once that someone read it the way it was written (and he was standing) before the great leaders of the generation, the Rabbis: R. Yitzchak Abuhav, R. Avraham Valenci, and R. Shmuel Valenci, his son, (may their memories be a blessing) - and they warned him to read it according to the tradition [i.e. not the way it was written], and he did not want to, and so they banned him and made him go down from the Ark.
